Football Game Safety Incident Follow Up

October 9, 2023

Anthony Wayne Community,

This letter is a follow up to the communication that was shared with you on Friday, Oct. 6 regarding the incident at the football game based on information shared with the District from the Whitehouse Police Department (WPD).

The WPD has shared with the District that a high school student was found to be in possession of two knives and a device that resembled a foldable gun that was determined to be a fake. This information was reported by a student to an adult. The adult immediately shared it with an officer who could see the student in question. The officer immediately approached, secured and took the student into custody.

District administration was notified after the student was removed from school property. After consulting with the District administration and the safety plans for the District, the WPD believed the situation posed no further threat to spectators and participants at the game.

The student has been charged by the WPD, and remains out of school at this time. District administrators have not had the opportunity to interview the student, as the student remains in police custody.

The District thanks the WPD for their quick action in this situation and providing security at school events. Please remind your child of the importance of reporting safety concerns to an adult. Thanks to the quick thinking of the student who initially reported this situation, the WPD was able to quickly intervene.

Sincerely,

Jim Fritz, Superintendent
